The podcast series!!
Y'all, I am so incredibly excited to share some very big and awesome news with you...I am starting my own podcast series! It's a new form of media that I've decided to explore to become more interactive with you! I never thought that I would be this fortunate to receive such an opportunity, but here we are! I could not have asked for a better story of how it came to be. Read on to see how the magic unfolded.
the story of how it came to be...
One day after classes, I was checking my email from the blog's email address and came across a submission. As promised, I read all of the submissions that you guys write to me and try to respond as quickly as possible. This one was a little bit different. It came from Akib Khan, a UNC senior.
He complimented the blog and thanked me for putting so much time and effort into it as it really has been helping students, but then he proposed something very interesting. See, he is involved with the journalism school and has been editing podcast series on the side, simply for his own kind of stress relief from his busy pre-dental course load. Acknowledging the mission of the blog and wanting to help me reach more students like him, Akib offered to put together a long-term podcast series!

What can I expect from the podcast?
Excellent question, and I'm really glad that you asked. I have agreed that I will record a new podcast episode 1-2 times each month. They will typically be relatively short, ranging from 15 to 45 minutes. And I won't always be the sole individual featured. I plan on interviewing people that are within my social circle about whatever seems intriguing and relevant that day, professors who I believe have a really insightful topic to share, and students in the dental school that have interesting stories and perspectives that are not necessarily dental related.
So, the short and sweet version of all of that is this: this series is going to be a fun way for you to get little taste of dental school and my life, ranging from academics to fun and funny topics.

where can i find the podcasts?
About the first recording session...
Fast forward to Sunday, January 14th. I nervously walked into the recording studio and met Akib for the first time. He was so welcoming and reassured me that if I didn't like any part of my responses or wanted to redo the entire session, that that was perfectly alright with him. He was just there for me. So, I pulled the microphone close, placed the extra cushioned headphones over my ears, and listened to the complete silence that the recording studio provides when a recording is happening.
I could literally hear myself breathing through the headphones. Frankly, I'm surprised that the mic didn't catch my heart beating out of my chest too. Akib began asking me a series of questions, and I tried to collect myself as I came up with thoughtful but also entertaining responses. I'll admit, there were definitely a few times when I slipped up, but hey, when you realize that hundreds of people will listen to this podcast one day, wouldn't you be too?
At the end of the session, I thanked Akib profusely for giving me this opportunity to expand the audience that I hope to reach and affording me the experience of experimenting with various communication medias. Before I left, I asked him why he had extended this invitation to me. Was this a senior project for him? Was he trying to network because he's a pre-dental student and I'm a current dental student? What was the motivation? His response was so incredibly heartwarming.
Akib has apparently been visiting my site for a few weeks now since he received an email from the UNC pre-dental listserv that featured my website as an additional pre-dental source. He told me that he really liked seeing my transformation as a dental student and as an individual who was trying to accomplish the daunting task of becoming a dentist while also keeping up a blog about the entire journey. "I like to help people that grind to achieve their goal." There are truly no words that I can say to express how selfless this act of kindness is. If I were to even try, I know that I would fall short.
