Thanksgiving in charleston, sC
I love visiting Poppy and Grandma's house. There's something about it that brings me back to years ago when we were bundled up visiting the market in the winter, or racing to the neighborhood pool during the summer. This year was especially special because it was the first time that a significant other was celebrating the holidays with my family. Surprisingly, it went off without a hitch, and all had a wonderful time.
Our tradition is running the Turkey Trot as a family before Gma races home to cook the turkey. Kathryn, though, was racing for the first place money and fame, so we all decided to cheer her on during the race. Dad and I raced through the streets of Charleston (almost impossible in heel booties across cobblestone), trying to catch a glimpse of her on Meeting and King Streets. David, Grandma, and Poppy were at the finish line to encourage her as she crossed the line, winning by 1 second. $500 dollars and a beautiful painting later, we left the downtown square and paraded back home to help Gma make the Thanksgiving feast.
Apparently everyone got the memo to bring an appetizer this year. We gorged on baked brie, baked figs, and cranberry goat cheese while the aromas of food in the oven filled the kitchen. I love when my family comes together to celebrate the holidays. I love it even more when my sweet boyfriend is there, celebrating it with us.
After dinner, Gma pulled me aside and remarked on how sweet David is and how she is so glad that he part of our family. My sister views him as her brother, and Dad talks politics and current affairs with him openly, and Kristen is always excited to FaceTime with him (even if it's really to see the puppies at our home). He is what I am most thankful for this year.
After a stressful year of Dad's cancer and Kathryn graduating college to venture the world on her own, it was so nice to finally have a joyous celebration with the family together, under the roof that has housed so many wonderful memories.
So, it's now Saturday afternoon, and we are leaving in about 2 hours after the men watch half of the Iron Bowl (Alabama vs. Auburn). I'm soaking in the last few moments at Gma's house and discussing what we're learning in dental school with Poppy. I am so thankful that I get to experience moments like these. These are the memories that will get me through the next few weeks of final exams.

There are many things I am grateful for this year, and I am so glad that I have a significant other who was there to celebrate them with me.
